Toning Cyanotype - Jasmine Tea

Toning Cyanotype - Jasmine Tea

Dec 27, 2020

One thing that I love about the Cyanotype process is that you can go further by toning your prints which can be quite amazing.

My first experience with Jasmine tea was pretty satisfying. In comparison to Orange Pekoe tea, I found that Jasmine tea toned more towards a chocolatey brown where the Orange Pekoe tea toned more towards a reddish brown.

I will share my experience and workflow that I followed through with Jasmine tea and Cyanotype process.

Test Print #1

Preparation( mixing ratios):

  • Bleach bath is one teaspoon washing soda in one liter of water.

  • Toning bath is 10 teabags in one liter of water, (Jasmine Tea)

  • Rinse bath is cold tap water.

*make sure the washing soda has completely dissolved and that your toning bath has cooled down to about room temperature before you begin the toning process.

Test Print #2

Highlights seem to be better maintained on Jasmine tea toned prints than Orange Pekoe tea toned prints which is something I really like. I will follow up with a direct comparison of a Jasmine tea toned print and an Orange Pekoe tea toned print.
