Mildred wrung her hands in her lap as she waited in the stark hospital waiting room. Even with the deliberately placed bright floral paintings on the wall, it still felt blank, empty, and sterile. Unfeeling. Cold.
Two minutes. She'd stepped away for two minutes and that was all it took. How quickly things could happen, how quickly life could turn upside down. She stared down at the cracked pink polish on her toes as they peeked out the ends of her sandals. She wiggled them as if to remind herself she was still here. Everything felt numb.
The door finally creaked open on weary hinges and a doctor stepped through. He looked at Mildred and she thought he had kind eyes. Thank goodness he had kind eyes, something warm in this cold place. He had a clipboard and he called her name. She stood, shaky, breath frozen in her throat. What news?
