Tokyo unkonown districts: Sugamo

Tokyo unkonown districts: Sugamo

Jan 28, 2021

Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara...Tokyo is much more than these famous touristic areas! It's said that Tokyo is like a pomegranate, made of many small grains, and well, it's true!
Tokyo is a microcosm of different worlds, each with its own soul...

So let's start a journey around the less-touristic areas of the city, discovering what they have to offer and a glimpse of their atmosphere.

Every week I'll post about a new district: follow me to not to miss any update!

Sugamo: the Grandma's Harajuku

Along the Toden-Arakawa Tram line, Sugamo is also called the Harajuku of the grannies because of its main shopping street: full of shops dedicated to the elderly, from clothing to accessories, who live in many in this area. The reason? It is a flat area, with no stairs and therefore easily accessible. Along Jizo Dori there are also several shops selling red underwear, the color associated with energy and health, often gifted to the over 60s.
At the Koganji Temple, people come to pray for good health and it is said that by washing the statue of Kannon and then rubbing a towel on the statue on the part corresponding to where we feel pain, the evil will pass!
Sugamo was also the first station of Nakasendo, the road that in the Edo period connected ancient Tokyo to Kyoto and for this reason there are still several Jizo statues, protectors of travelers, along the road and at the Shinshoji Temple.
Not far away is the Rikugien garden, one of the Tokyo gardens that are worth a visit.
