Chick Corea line on 'Samba Song'

Chick Corea line on 'Samba Song'

Jan 17, 2021

Here's a transcription of a brilliant Chick Corea line from his solo on the tune Samba Song, taken from his 1978 album Friends. It's a particularly interesting idea to study as it's based around some quite guitaristic ideas - big arpeggio sweeps (should you choose to play it that way), pentatonic patterns - yet still has a certain 'otherness' to it that sets it apart from something a guitarist would have come up with. On the original track the line was played an octave up from where I've written it but, while not impossible to play, works much better for guitar taken down an octave. I also need to mention that there are a few points in the original where Chick Corea accidentally hits an adjacent note at the same time as the intended one which I've deliberately left out from this transcription as 1) they're pretty much impossible to play on guitar up to speed, and 2) to my mind they don't really add anything to our understanding of the line.
