Dipping Our Toe into the Pool of Respectability Politics

Jan 22, 2021

So I was deputized to be a Moderator of the official ADOS: American Descendants of Slavery Facebook group the other day to my delight. I lasted about 4 hours. lol I figured I might as well flex and just be the M. Rasheed you all know & love just so I could see where the line was, since the over-generous activist who gave me this power didn’t provide me any formal guidance. I told her I was going to observe, engage, and gather receipts to justify why I was going to start punching people in the back of the head. She responded with the “fire” reaction emoji, so what else was I going to do? lol This #MRasheedCartoons image was inspired by the aftermath, when I went into the group the next day to discover that I was not only no longer a Mod, but my ability to post/comment in the group was cut off (at first I thought it was everyone, but no. Just me). When I queried the activist she said, “Bruh. Four hours in, someone emailed a complaint against you. The post about violent revolution puts us all at risk, fam.” I explained the nature of my position and that I was by no means calling for ADOS to start a war, but I also understood that if the two founders wanted us all to chill until after the tension of the inauguration vs QAnon blew over I got it.
