Watercolor Landscape Tutorial!

11x14 Stonehenge Aqua. Hake, Rigger, card. Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Light Red Oxide, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine, Paynes Gray. For this experiment, I thought about a focal point and creating an image radiating out from it. I completely saturated the paper, and used a paper towel to dry the area I wanted to lead the eye to. In this spot, with a rigger, I quickly painted in some water and distant horizon. After that I then started painting in raw sienna and ultramarine to start formulating the area around the focal point. Since the landmass on either side of the opening would be kind of "midway" into the painting, I blocked in relatively strong colors (figuring that would help that area come forward) I then started my next layer, continuing in wet in wet, putting in tree trucks and foliage. I didnt worry too much about the tree shapes, since they would have a closer layer of trees over them, but i feel it helps create the illusion of depth. Foliage was stippled in with the hake. My next layer of trees were more defined, more spaced out, and given more character. I i used a card to scrape in accents on the trees as well as the foreground.
