Dungeons & Dragons.

Feb 17, 2021

So, as you can tell, this post will be about D&D. Considerable more about the next campaign I intend on running and not the current Cruse of Strahd game we have going on at twitch.tv/mitchaked Saturday nights from 8:30pm JST.

A whole new world.

That's the hook (for the players at least). Much like Barovia in the Stahd game, Theros is limited in the area it has available to play in. That's kind of a lie. You can play in the whole world, its just not very big compared to other D&D settings. There is an edge to the world in Theros but that's not to say the party wont go exploring.

There are so many cool location in Theros and so many already available to the players to explore and get to know better that I'm confident as a DM that I wont have a hard time convincing them to explore more. So many of the locations have such thought provoking descriptions that I can quite easily make an adventure for each location and hopefully put it some form of over arching plot and story that can go along with it.

Theros ranges from swamp, desert, plains, mountains, oceans, islands, it has every type of landscape (with thanks to the MTG origins of the setting). It means the party can come across all kinds of peoples, monsters, environments, hazards, challenges, and have a truly exotic and wonderful time in a single campaign!

Starting out.

Much to I'm sure my players lament, They will start at level 1. It just makes setting everything up easier. It makes managing new characters easier. It makes NPCs more meaningful if they have known them longer. It makes the setting more threatening if they explore outside the cities. It makes their character growth and leveling up more exciting.

I have yet to choose a starting location. I have a few in mind but I really wanna see what kind of characters are being thought up and what ideas people have before starting them all in a situation that their character might not make sense being involved in. There are so many great starting locations in Theros that I honestly find it hard to decide. Likely, they will start in a large city. Likely, they'll all be visitors to the city. Their presence requested by some organization.

An adventure fit for the Gods.

What would a setting like Theros be without divine intervention. The Gods will be there. Watching and judging. The characters will all each earn piety towards their chosen god. They will gain benefits, boons, items, and many more things should they please their god. And doing something against that gods ideal will be met with swift punishment or perhaps be ignored by them until the regain their favor once again.

I'm really going to be trying hard in this next campaign to reward the players and their characters for acting on their god behalf. Acting as they would in the world. Roleplaying situations that would benefit their character and its god over the needs of the party perhaps. I mean, it really depends which gods they all worship.

I am looking at taking this game all the way to level 20. I really want to. Its going to take some time, years even. I'm ok with that so long as the players are having fun. I'm going to be hard critiquing myself and I hope you do to. Not about the rules, no, about the feel. About the immersion. About the descriptions and engagement I have with the players and the world. I want to make this next campaign as epic as possible. I need your help.

When. Where. Who. How. What. Why.

The game will be on the same time slot as the current campaign HOWEVER!!! I am planning to upload the VOD of each session to youtube this time! Channel link etc will the announced closer to the game launching date so follow along. Likely around April?

On twitch. Same as always twitch.tv/mitchaked and VODs up to youtube.

Same players as currently have. We have a lot. 6 players and sometimes they have trouble getting on so we'll likely play every week (barring some other commitments) even if its only 3 people (depending on the current story location, EG. I dont wanna have to control 2-3 players in a major combat and the monsters too).

We use roll20. its easy to use, its where we are all comfortable playing, and its free (mostly).

The game will be a series of homebrew adventures all under that one sort of major story set in Theros.

Why? why not. We all love D&D and I want to share that love for you all and hopefully I can share some DMing tricks and tips I've learnt along the way and perhaps even entertain you.

Thanks.

To everyone who is constantly an inspiration to continue to create. To my players for putting up with me. To everyone who drops in and says hi in the chat. To everyone who has subbed to the twitch channel, or even just followed! To everyone who has bought me a coffee. Thank you for #fuelingcreativity in #dnd
