Crafting is our superpower!

Crafting is our superpower!

Mar 24, 2020

In Episode 22 of The Craft Room Podcast I talked about how we can use our crafting superpowers to support people who are doing it tough. Here in Australia we've had drought, catastrophic bushfires, floods, and now a pandemic. People are struggling, and crafters have a unique skill-set to help on many levels. During the bushfires, crafters worldwide created bat wraps, koala mittens, joey pouches, nests and more to support Australian wildlife carers who were overwhelmed. In a very short space of time, sufficient items were made to support not only the Australian carers, but surplus went to wildlife carers around the world. It was a beautiful thing to watch. A group on Facebook called #remakechristmas is packed with crafters creating handmade Christmas decorations and cards to distribute to those who lost theirs in the bushfires. Jennifer McGuire is spearheading a campaign to encourage card makers to create, send and hand out cards with messages of love, appreciate and encouragement to those on the front line, at risk and struggling during this pandemic.

Not only does a handmade item bring joy, relief, assistance and hope to the receiver ... it gives something to the creator as well. It gives us a sense of purpose when we might be feeling a bit lost. It gives us a distraction from the seemingly neverending stream of bad news bombarding us. It gives us a great feeling inside, knowing we have made someone else's day just a little bit brighter.

Crafting in times of crisis is not new... my grandmother knitted socks for soliders in WWII. There is once again a huge craft movement around the world right now, with crafters using their superpowers for the good of the broader community. I've never been more proud to be a crafter!
