The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) ...

The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black book review

Mar 28, 2020

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

The Wicked King is the second installment in The Folk of the Air series. It's starts off five months after the heart wrenching events in book one.

Jude she schemes restlessly to keep the power she stole at the end of the first book. Not only does she have to keep Cardan in check, but she now has to deal with the entire court who would love nothing more than to do away with her.

Cardan, while utterly himself, continued to surprise me. He's one of those unpredictable  characters, His relationship with Jude is tense, angsty. It's fun to read. You never quite know what he has up his sleeve or his true intentions, and trust me, he'll leave you guessing until the very end - not to mention, he might be a tad more powerful than we all expected.

Then we have Madoc, Jude's 'stepfather' whom she totally betrayed and made a fool of at the end of the first book. As you can guess, he's not thrilled.

The plot was fabulous, the way it slowly picked up speed and that ending is wow.
