Vulnerability is Strength

Vulnerability is Strength

Mar 15, 2021

Vulnerability, as defined by Oxford Languages is “the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally”.

When it comes to vulnerability, we look up to those who can easily share their deepest and raw self. However, when it comes to ourselves - having to be vulnerable, well that’s a different story.

Growing up, most of us have been taught to not be vulnerable, as it is a form of weakness. So what do we do? We put on a mask and form these walls in hopes to protect ourselves.

Although some may say that they don’t care, all of us deep down fear getting shamed, judged, and getting shot down. So this mask acts as a barrier to protect us from that.

We choose to put on this mask that makes us ‘acceptable’ and loved in society. One that gets everyone to praise and love us because we are ‘strong’ and this certain somebody.

To be vulnerable is to peel our exterior, layer by layer until we see our bare soul, which can be very terrifying and makes us feel weak.

However, being vulnerable doesn’t make you weak. It actually makes you strong

It takes strength show who we really are under all those layers. It’s a different kind of strength to rip off that mask and say this is the real me. It takes courage to put yourself out there even though you are at risk of being ‘attacked’.

By being vulnerable, you are telling others, “this is who I truly am and how I genuinely feel. That I may have pain, scars and some baggage, but I am taking the courage to acknowledge this and step out to share it with you.”

By showing vulnerability to others, it allows them to see that it’s okay for them to be vulnerable too. It encourages others to push through that fear of showing their true self and sharing their emotions as well.

Vulnerability is self-acceptance and the key to building deeper and meaningful connections with others. Don’t shut others out – rather let them in.

Therefore, don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Opening that realm can open many doors and lead you to all the amazing possibilities and opportunities out there.

Vulnerability is strength.
