The Flesh and the Fiends (1960)

The Flesh and the Fiends (1960)

May 05, 2021

Do the ends justify the means? What can we sacrifice to advance medical knowledge? Because you can’t dissect out one’s soul postmortem, does that mean we don’t have them? That’s what this movie is about.

Peter Cushing goes 100mph in this! He had the best lines of dialogue and every time he got into an intellectual argument with his peers, I got fucking giddy. He verbally crushed his adversaries with ease and boy was it fun to watch! He sure was great at being bad.

That man is doing the devil’s work.

Aye...and doing it brilliantly.

It was so weird but cool to see Donald Pleasence in something pre-Halloween. I honestly didn’t even recognize him. His character was awful and I was rooting for justice to come down hard on him.

I absolutely love the messaging and strong debates pointed out in the film. It’s purpose is to make you question what is worth sacrificing to better humanity, and if you are actually even doing so. This movie also turned me on to Dermot Walsh. He was great as Dr. Mitchell! I will need to find more of his movies as well as Peter Cushing’s.

I highly recommend this. Just be prepared for some violence and one scene with sexual assault (ugh why even include it?).
