10 songs I (somewhat) inexplicably enjoy

May 05, 2021

So those of you who have listened to my songs on Spotify will have figured out that my favorite music genres are all rock-based. No, not the growling ones you here people use to mock rock music. Rather, something along the lines of Queen and U2 for softer music and Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed for harder music, with a bit of Ghost, Bon Jovi, and others in between.

But as I was wandering around YouTube, hoping I don’t get stuck too much in that vortex of weird videos (don’t even pretend you don’t know about videos such as that guy playing Thunderstruck alongside his washing machine), I found myself listening to some songs which I can’t really understand why I enjoy so much, and yet I do…a lot.

So I figured I’d present them to you because, you know, they’re actually kinda nice to listen to. In order, they go from least inexplicable to most inexplicable. Now don’t get me wrong, I am in no way saying these songs are bad. I just find it a bit unexpected for me to be enjoying them so much, is all.

Now that we got that unnecessarily long intro out of the way, let’s get to singing in the blog post:

10. The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

Yeah yeah, I too have watched all 8 seasons and 22 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. It’s funny how people keep telling me there are two more that I need to watch in order for the show to actually be over. For me, it always ends at episode 22 of season 9.

Yeah, this song is easy enough to enjoy. It’s upbeat, the accent makes it 1000 times better and it’s an all-in-all very fun-inducing song. While not particularly close to the songs I usually enjoy, it’s a banger tune, especially when on the road

9. Rihanna – California King Bed

I am old enough to remember a very young Rihanna in 2005 or 2006 with her first 3 songs. Pon De Replay was immensely successful and I hated it. Well, not necessarily hated it, but just…didn’t enjoy it as much as the other ones around me.

This particular song though is one I thoroughly enjoy for…whatever reason. I guess it’s because it’s very close to a standard cookie cutter rock ballad and it actually is pretty focused on guitar work. Plus, Rihanna, while not even close to being one of my favorite artists, sings her heart out in this one.

8. All Saints – Pure Shores

This song just…hits you differently. Though I spent a lot of time playing computer games when I was little, I did not learn of this song from GTA (I think it was in Vice City).

It was played randomly on VH1 one day and I was instantly hooked on it. Never forgot the title of the song for years and when I finally understood how YouTube worked many years later, it was one of the first songs I wanted to listen to again.

7. Keane – Somewhere Only We Know

I hated this song at first. Like…a lot. But it grew on me. It helped that whenever I listened to the song, it would always be with video since this one got played a lot in 2004 on VH1.

And it slowly but surely grew on me. Keane actually morphed into one of those bands I enjoy, whatever they may put out. And their songs still stand the test of time for me any many others.

6. Daniel Powter – Bad Day

So apparently I have a thing for songs with piano in them. Another gem that seems to flow under the radar when it comes to pop songs, this one works so well with the damn video.

I think I was like in my freshman or sophomore year in high school when this bad boy gained a lot of traction and given how I had to change from one set of classmates to another, this song would make my day so much better all the time.

5. Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk

OK, now we’re getting into some weird music territory. But yeah, I enjoyed this song so much in 2015. 2015 was a really good year for music, there were a lot of songs from that year which were so enjoyable.

And this one is no different. An actually upbeat modern song you can play at just about any event, be it a wedding or a simple party, and the people would just erupt.

4. Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere

This song is so relaxing. Never been a big Fleetwood Mac fan, though I can appreciate their role in music.

This one just hits differently, you know. Such a soothing sensation when listening to the song.

3. Taylor Swift – Blank Space

There’s a better chance we find life outside of Earth before I can come up with a rational explanation as to why I enjoy this song. It’s just…I don’t know, Taylor’s 1989 album was filled with enjoyable songs.

I couldn’t really get into any of her older or newer songs, but this album was actually pretty decent.

2. Shakira – Waka Waka

This song was inescapable in 2010. And boy was that a good thing. I’d rather listen to this song over and over than overplayed 80s and 90s songs.

And what’s not to like about it? Upbeat, fun, with Shakira, Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the whole Spain team either at their peak or slowly reaching their peak, it was such a good time. Sure, as a Liverpool fan, these times ain’t so bad either.

The reason I put this song up so high is that I usually don’t bother with FIFA World Cup or Euro Championships songs. And that’s usually because they’re so forgettable.

I mean, apart from the FIFA WC of 1998 with Dario G’s Carnaval de Paris and Ricky Martin’s La Copa de la Vida and also Nelly Furtado’s Forca in 2004…there’s not a lot of memorable football songs out there.

I had faith in Shakira delivering a good song, but I never expected it to be of this magnitude.

1. Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette – Hello

Much like Taylor’s song from before, this one is even harder to explain. I’m not a tennis fan, nor a Martin Solveig fan, though I did enjoy some other songs of his.

This song was an odd one. I always enjoyed watching the video of the song for…whatever reason. And even though the song itself was devoid of any actual meaning behind the catchy chorus and it being a…love song I guess, which I am not a fan of, I found myself inexplicably drawn to this one.

So yeah, that about covers it. Those are 10 songs I unexpectedly enjoyed over the years. What are some songs that you enjoy that you did not expect to like?

Enjoy this post?
