Have you ever heard the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”? This common phrase is very true, as the community plays an important role in the development of a child. This is beautifully depicted in the nostalgic and tender book “A Map Into The World” by Khao Kalia Yang, illustrated by Seo Kim and published in October 2019 by Lerner Publishing Group. This is the story of a young Hmong American girl (just like the author) that appreciates the world around her. Every detail is an invitation for Paj Ntaub to explore and enjoy. The story goes beyond the familiarity of her home, her parents, twin siblings and grandmother. It extends to the neighbourhood, to the community. Paj Ntaub loves waving at her neighbours Bob and Ruth. She greets them in every season, until winter comes, fading life away. The little Hmong American girl comes up with the perfect idea to help his friend Bob to transit grief: she gives him a map into the world.
