What to do when breastfeeding is making ...

What to do when breastfeeding is making you hangry

Nov 14, 2021

I know we can both agree that breastfeeding hunger is REAL.

It’s got nothing on pregnancy hunger.

When you’re breastfeeding postpartum, you can get down right hangry.

Your hunger increases while breastfeeding because of the huge demand it puts on your body.

The average amount of calories required for milk production ranges from an extra 450-600 per day!

That 450-600 calories is ON TOP of your everyday needs.

It depends how much milk your baby drinks (and if you’re feeding more than one) but needless to say, that’s quite a bit extra.

So it's important you eat.

Early postpartum and lactation is not the time to cut calories.

You grew a person! And your body is still growing that person. They just happen to be on the outside of your body now so please, give yourself some grace.

Instead of stressing about what kind of food you're eating, focus more on replacing any “not-so-nutrient-dense-foods” with whole foods, when you can.

Motherhood is busy.

There are days you can’t even fit in a shower so I am definitely not telling you to prepare a gourmet meal.

  • Focus on foods that are full of protein

  • Full of fibre

  • Full of healthy fats

These kinds of foods will help fill you up, keep your blood sugar steady and support milk production.

This is why I love smoothies so much. One handed meals to put the breastfeeding hangry to rest. I have many but here’s one of my favourites

Milk Boosting Berry Smoothie:

  • 1 ¼ cup vanilla oat milk (sweetened or unsweetened)

  • 2 scoops collagen powder

  • 1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder

  • ½ tsp moringa powder

  • 2 tbsp ground flax seed

  • 1 tbsp almond butter (or peanut or sunflower butter)

  • ½ cup frozen berries (I love raspberries)

  • ½ cup frozen cauliflower

Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth!

Depending on the consistency of smoothie you prefer, you may need to add more liquid or some additional cauliflower or ice.

Enjoy!

Cheers to a confident postpartum experience!
