Jewish Memorial

Jewish Memorial

Jun 25, 2020

Opened in 2005, the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe was designed by New York based architect Peter Eisenmann. Inspired in design layout by the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague, Czech Republic, the memorial consists of 2,711 unique, solid concrete blocks. The meaning behind the individual pieces and the memorial as a whole has been left up to the interpretation of the individual visitor. As one winds through the corridors, the lack of set meaning encourages individual reflection on what one of Germany’s darkest historical periods means but on a very personal basis. In five years of tour guiding, I have heard some of the most inciteful and emotional interpretations from people coming from all walks of life. Looking at the picture, what does it mean to you?
