The Big Save Up

The Big Save Up

Dec 29, 2021

Working a traditional 9-5 job is not the type of job I want to have to travel the way I want. I’d love to travel where I want and when I want.

The brutal and honest truth is that, at least for me, I will most likely always need a full time job. Between my student loans from undergrad and grad school, and other debt, I’ll need consistent and substantial income to pay this debt off.

There’s no other way around it. Even if I made a decent income from my blog and YouTube channel (whenever I’m able to monetize it), I’d still need quite a bit of money consistently coming in to pay my debts off and have extra money to travel.

Having a full time job, even if it’s remote, is my reality now and in the future.

With that being said, that’s not to say that I don’t plan on traveling. I love to travel and I will always find ways to travel.

So, earlier this year, I started a little travel savings. Each paycheck, or every other paycheck, I put some money aside for travel.

But it’s not just for any travel. This savings is going towards my big 6 month or year long travel in the future! That’s right, I’m planning to save up to travel for half a year or a whole year!

I’m super excited about this!

Why am I doing this? Well, to be honest, I’m not happy or content with my current job. Being a social worker has its rewards but the stress, mental and physical strain, and underpaid conditions seems to be outweighing the rewards for me.

I try to look at the bigger picture, try to see all the good I’m doing for these kids and families in foster care. However, the longer I do this job, the more stressed out and unhappy I’m becoming. Even with some of the good that comes from my line of work, more often than not, it’s hard and wins are far, few, and in between.

I don’t plan on being a social worker forever. I’m trying to give my self 3 more years with this job. That’s 3 more years to plan, save my money, and to cut down on as much of my debt as I possibly can.

Once my 5 year mark with my job has come, I’m done being a social worker. Before I jump into a new job, I’d LOVE to go backpacking and traveling for 6 months or a whole year. I’d love to do this without worrying about PTO, asking permission to take off, worrying about getting back to work, etc.

It’ll be just me and the world! I know I’ll get there, I just have to be patient and by my time. 3 years and counting down…
