Jonkonnu - a Jamaican Christmas Custom

Jonkonnu is one of the oldest dance forms in Jamaica. It was introduced to the island by the Igbo slaves from Nigeria in West Africa who were taken to Jamaica as slaves during the plantation era.

Jonkonnu is a derivation of the name of the West African merchant named John Canoe or Connu who it is believed the dance was named after.
