Blue-winged Pitta in a Bangkok Park

Blue-winged Pitta in a Bangkok Park

Jan 03, 2022

Blue-winged Pitta is a jewel of a bird. With its black mask, white throat contrasting against the fawn breast and green back, set of by a blue flash, it is an amazing spalsh of colour on the forest floor. The red patch on the belly and vent only add to this marvellous bird's appeal. Blue-winged Pitta is a migratory bird which spends much of its time in Indonesia, migrating north to Malaysia and Thailand in the wet season, nesting in forests, plantations and gardens in rural areas but it does turn up in small numbers in parks in Bangkok in passage migration. However, I was both surprised and lucky to find out that shortly after my return to Thailand a Blue-winged Pitta had taken up temporary residence in one of Bangkok's parks where I was able to get this set of photographs and create a video about it - https://youtu.be/Dz9ifiGbvm4
