As we roll into the new year, there are also new things in Tech that are upon us, starting with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
This year, like the previous few years will see many of the presentations be virtual, but typically this is where we see anything from a refrigerator that does your grocery shopping to a robot that brings you toilet paper. And while I find some of those things interesting, there aren't as enticing to me as the tech developments in the PC space. Yes, some of that PC space has grown out into infrastructure like mining rigs for crypto, but the bulk of it is allegedly geared toward the home consumer.
The past two plus years has seen demand rise because of PC's needed for school, gaming and even streaming movies and shows, but if the 'conundrum' ever truly abates to the point where we start seeing more time around each other, the demand could ease and we may even find ourselves able to purchase these products for a semi reasonable price. (One can hope, can't he)
Getting new parts and exploring new tech is good for people like me, because our hobby is to explore and try out those items and share what we learn with you. That means that there is bound to be a lot of new stuff I get to take a look at, but it also means I have no idea what some of it will be. New products on new platforms from Intel and AMD mean a whole new set of data to discover and NVidia trying to buy ARM (they concentrate on mobile processors), could mean that we have three BIG companies producing the two most important parts of our PCs.
How long before we start seeing a real split in the way processors are made and how software has to be written? It's more than XBOX vs PlayStation vs Nintendo, this would be a fundamental shift in architecture. Now that could be exciting, and also a bit of a nightmare, but it will promise to be interesting. The unfortunate thing, though is new tech is never cheap, so the other thing to keep an eye on, will be to see if we can even afford any of it.
Yep, 2022 is going to be an interesting year.
