What is LitRPG/GameLit?

Jul 08, 2020

If you're following, you might know that I write GameLit/LitRPG. Also, you might be wondering, what the heck is gamelit?

I'm here to do my best to quench your curiosity.

Gamelit is the umbrella term for a story that takes place in a game world. It can also be a story that takes place in the 'real world' with gaming elements. Think of an RPG game in book form and that's what Gamelit is in a nutshell. The graphic above shows you the different forms of GameLit, although it might have to be updated as new types of books are coming out.

GameLit is an umbrella term because it takes place in a game world. GameLit and LitRPG are not interchangeable. GameLit tends to be labeled as such when the gaming elements are 'light'. LitRPG on the other hand has many more stats broken down such as Luck, Strength, Money, XP, etc...

It's unclear when LitRPG became big but some people say the Russians started the trend before 2010. Others say it started in 2015. It really depends on who you ask. I tend to be labeled as the founder of Survival Horror Gamelit with my zombie series, but I'm a humble person, so I don't brag about it. For me, I was a big-time gamer growing up and felt that certain games were excellent but lacked a real story. I could imagine a really good story for certain video games. Also, I felt I could invent a good story that just happened to fit the mold of a future game.

GameLit is a niche genre and I also get questions often on what it is. I hope this article answered some of your questions. If you have any more questions, click here to view another article on what LitRPG is.
