Leave non-Tamils but even many Tamils don't know that Jainism (referred to as Jainam, Chainam, Amanam, Arugam in Tamil) was a flourishing religion in Tamil Nadu 2000 years ago; not just anywhere in Tamil Nadu, but in the place where the last Tamil Changam (assembly of scholars & poets) was held, Madurai & a few other southern districts. After studying briefly about it in school, only recently have I explored a lot about it. I've selected 18 pictures from Chithannavaasal & Kunnavayal in Pudhukkottai district from my travel - தமிழரல்லாதோரை விடுங்கள், பல தமிழர்களுக்கே சமண மதம் (ஜைனம், சைனம், அமணம், அருகம் எனத் தமிழில் வழங்கப்படுகிறது) தமிழ்நாட்டில் இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் ஒரு செழித்து வளர்ந்த மதம் என்பது தெரிவதில்லை; தமிழ்நாட்டில் எங்கோ இல்லை, கடைத் தமிழ்ச் சங்கம் நடந்த மதுரையிலும் இன்ன சில தென் மாவட்டங்களிலும் சமணம் செழித்திருந்தது.

Chithannavaasal is a popular tourist destination because of the beautiful paintings it has. So, I have avoided some obviously known sceneries from there & photographing paintings are prohibited to protect them from further degradation. The Chithannavaasal hill from the main road. On the right-hand side, the Jain beds are located inside a natural cave. On the left, the beautiful Ajantha-like paintings are located inside a monastery.

Here's a short video of the steep hill where the rock-cut (relief) monastery/temple structure called Arivar Koil. Inside this some beautiful 7th-century paintings are located. You can google these beautiful paintings.

The stunning landscape is visible from the rock-cut temple. On the bottom left, just below the hill, you can see an elephant statue situated in front of an ancient Ayyanar shrine. Ayyanar is a Tamil folk guardian deity.

That elephant statue & behind a peacock on top of a rock.

That Ayyanar shrine. Professor Nedunchezhiyan from Tamil Nadu who's known for his book, "Aaseevagam & Ayyanar History" bases some of his tallest claims such as Ayyanar was a founder of a Tamil religion called Aaseevagam & the rock-cut sculptures inside the Jain monastery is in fact Ayyanar and not Jain Thirthankaras based on this shrine & the paintings inside.

The offering horses to Ayyanar in the shrine.

The natural cave is situated on the hill housing the Jain beds. The beds are in their worst possible condition with vandals written all over them even hiding the ancient Tamil-Brahmi script, now gated. According to the inscription, "Chiruposil's Ilaiyar built this abode for the Mysore's Kumuzhoor born Jain thirthankaras". Shows how historically Tamils had been supporting diverse religions from other regions.

Another Ayyanar shrine just near the hill. This Ayyanar shrine is special because here, he has only one wife. Ancient Ayyanar scultptures actually don't have any wife sculptures, they sit alone. But, in medieval times, he gets one wife, like in the picture. Then later days, he gets two wives named, Poorana & Porkalai like you see today. Also, notice how these Ayyanar sculptures look very much like a Jain thirthankara or vice versa.

Kunnavayal / Sadayar Hill -

Pudhukkottai district has plenty of Jain monuments & I was able to visit only two in my short trip. Chitthannavaasal was a planned one that I went to with a friend. But, Kunnavayal was an unplanned one I just stumbled upon on a highway while I was photographing some Ayyanar shrines. Thanks to this signboard I found it when I sheltered at the bus stop due to rain.

The serene route to Sadayar Hill in Kunnavayal village. One of the memorable walks with beautiful scenery & lot of lakes on the roadside.

Thanks to the monsoon, after many years the mostly dry Pudhukkottai district's lakes were full. Also, I noticed that this area is a quarry area.

Another beautiful lake filled with lotus & lilies.

A kid fishing. This scene immediately reminded me of the Chitthannavaasal paintings I saw the previous day. I started thinking about how the painter used his imagination to create a surrealistic painting with local sceneries & stood here for a long while.

I walked for half an hour before seeing the sight of the Kunnavayal village. On both sides, I saw this remnant of old quarries & the lakes created there. By now I started worrying because usually Jain monuments are on hills & here the hills look hopeless. I was wishing to see at least a small stone in the monument.

Had a huge sigh of relief after seeing this signboard again & I was sure there will be something on this hill. This hill was intact & acted as the beginning of the end of the Kunnavayal village.

There it is! The Jain thirthankara's sculpture is on top of the hill. People here worship this as a version of another Tamil village folk deity, Muneeswaran, in the name of Sadayanar (A Muni with long hair), probably because the thirthankara has a triple umbrella & crown (a common Jain iconography) structure behind his head that resembles hair. This hill is also called as Sadayanar Hill.

Just to the right of the shrine, on the cliff, I saw this huge stone plaque inscription. It was all wet & slope. So I didn't bother going to the other side for a better photo. The inscription says a lot! It talks about how the Sadayar Hill people gave this land for the huge Jain temple called Chozha Perumpalli (perum palli = big school). For a better view of the plaque, see here.

A close up of the Jain Thirthankara with the iconic three umbrellas & crowns. I read a beautiful line in Tamil anthropologist, Tho. Paramasivan's book, "Tamil people won't leave anyone orphan, not even the deities, they'll embrace it & worship it as their own". This is a perfect example of it.

What is the use of god, if not for food? A flock of sheep came & ate all the delicious garlands. I was so happy when they made me realize this bigger cause of religious sites in general.

To be continued... Pudhukkottai has Jain monuments in various places around the city. A few other districts also have unique Jain monuments, some of them are well-protected, some of them are vandalised. Documenting these monuments is another dream of mine - தொடரும்...
