How I do my backtest

How I do my backtest

Feb 05, 2022

I don't do much backtesting, more just to gauge a setting that I have done the theory work for and then see if it actually would have done well short term the last 30 days. Making a perfect setting take many attempts and no setting is perfect but you can get a useable setting with loads of tweaking and hours wasted, and most people prefer a pre made setting.

I also prefer forward testing, and showing the data with the uPNL as its important to know your red bags and stuck deals as well. That's why I like to present my data in a spreadsheet like the Paper Trade Spreadsheet v5. Its more clearer to see everything, but the only problem is you don't see the average deal time. and how many average/max safety orders were filled.

But for those that want to backtest, I will show you the easiest way to do it via bot nerds.

First join the discord https://discord.gg/PwgKgW4hMF

Then there's two channels you are mainly working from. #commands and #results in the [NB] Backtester Category

So commands are issued in the #command. You will see tons of queued commands so just copy and paste one and paste it into the channel. But amend the data to suit the setting you want to test.

So for Mars settings and testing something like FTM/USDT I would put in the following:

!dcabacktest -pair ftm/usdt -tp 3 -bo 10 -so 10 -mstc 8 -sos 1.8 -os 1.4 -ss 1.3

then press enter and wait for the results in #results

Remember we can only see the last 30 days for free, if you want more specific dates or advanced commands, you need to pay additional fees, but most will be fine with just a simple backtest.

Don't fully rely on a backtest, because you can say run a backtest in November/December, but get completely different results as the market structure has changed in Jan. Using it as a baseline only is the best approach. I've had so many people run hours and hours of backtesting covering many months... but they are still not profitable because the market is not in the past, but the present, and things are never the same. Hope that makes sense, but what you want to do with the backtesting is up to you.

You can also try out the tradingview backtesting. But I really don't use them anymore as I find this is enough just to get a general idea of a setting that I want to forward test.

Happy Botting! And best of luck tweaking your own setting! Just don't ask me to review them please! Unless you've ran them for a few months forward tested and they are actually good! I get plenty of DM's a day already asking for the best setting or to review their own setting. I simply don't have the time to do a full report for free for everyone.
