Well, that was unexpected...😐

Well, that was unexpected...😐

Feb 25, 2022

Well, it's almost spring. I know, I know--I haven't posted anything here in over a month. This is because an unanticipated problem has reared its ugly noggin'.

We are too busy. 😬

If you're new here, Fluky Fiction is basically a millennial Mom-n-Pop literary business. I won't bore you with the details of our teeny beginnings, but they were exactly that. Teeny. We wanted to publish books that pleased our unconventional tastes, and so, we did. We believed in the stories we published and decided to invest time and money into getting them in front of more readers instead of just letting them float around in cyberspace. I learned how costly editing services can be, and I wanted to help out the authors who pitched their books to us that just didn't fit our weirdo preferences. So, I started freelance editing in 2017 to fund our publishing projects.

For the last 2(ish?) years, business has been booming.

I totally get why. Professional editing services can be expensive AF. And when you offer services for a 60%-75% discount, people are bound to get in line. Once we added ghostwriting services, the line of customers doubled, then tripled. Lately, I feel like I can't see the end of it no matter how hard I squint. The disbelief is indescribable, and I can't express my gratefulness to every author who has trusted us and booked our freelance services. Had someone told us years ago one of us would be doing literary work full-time, we would have laughed and dismissed the idea. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support and trust.

However, I do come bearing news that might be a little poopy.

Due to inflation and demand, we will need to increase our prices. πŸ˜•

Fluky Fiction's vision was to celebrate oddities. Our goal was to support unconventional authors and their stories. Freelance work has taken up my time for creation and supporting creators--a sad irony since the whole point was to be able to better fund those projects. It took me months to accept the inevitable. The amount of work we are getting is too much for us at the moment, and it is causing delays in our publishing work. I worry, too, that the quality of our work will suffer if we continue to take on too many projects.

I do think I've come to a sort of compromise, though!

One "project" I've been unable to follow through on is the writing video library. It was while trying to figure out when the hell I was going to get another one or two done that I realized something...

...wait, BuyMeACoffee!

Alrighty, so here is my "compromise" for the whole price increase thingy:

  • By subscribing to my BuyMeACoffee page for $10/month, you will get a 15% discount off editing services.

  • Returning customers will continue to receive editing services for the rate used for their most recent project within the last 12 months even if they don't subscribe to the page.

  • Subscribing will also give you access to the writing tips library plus discounts on coaching services. I'll think of some more goodies to throw in there too; feel free to send ideas!

Here's how your subscription will support us:

  • We'll be able to take on fewer projects.

  • Fewer projects = more time to create writing tip videos. The writing videos should help you clean up your manuscript before ordering editing services--which could reduce the rate/word. Having a "cleaner" manuscript will increase your chances of an agent or publisher giving it a chance since they won't need to invest as much time/money on editing. πŸ‘Œ

  • The quality of editing and writing services will continue to increase since we won't have to stretch ourselves too thin.

  • We'll be able to publish more books (maybe yours if it is a good fit)!

  • I'll have more time and resources to offer more services, like professional book trailers.

There are a few other tiers available on the page too. And hey, if you aren't down with the monthly subscription and one of the books we edited for you has made you back the cost of editing and then some, sliding a $5 our way would be amazing. The pains of inflation are very real, so there is absolutely no pressure or guilt-tripping if you're like, "Meh, I'm good" and want to keep your hard-earned cash. πŸ˜‰

I'm going to try my best to be more active on this page and to create more. Thank you to all who made it through my rambling. We appreciate you--as always.
