5 Common Causes of Pelvic Pressure in Women

Aug 03, 2020

Despite the fact that pelvis pressure is one of the main symptoms of bloating, it can have other causes. You should know that pressure in the pelvic area in women can be caused by certain conditions that affect the reproductive system and the urinary tract. That’s why it is essential to visit a gynecologist if you experience some unusual symptoms. In this article, we gathered five common causes of pelvic pressure in women.

1. Endometriosis

Despite the fact that endometriosis is a quite common condition, it is quite hard to diagnose it. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus) overgrowths and spreads on pelvic organs (the fallopian tubes, bladder, ovaries, etc.). This lining attaches organs and causes pain during sex and active movements. Women with endometriosis may also experience pelvic pressure.

You should know that there is no complete cure for endometriosis. However, there are certain treatment options that can help manage the symptoms of this condition. Your doctor may recommend medication or surgery for endometriosis. If left untreated, endometriosis can cause severe complications like chronic pain and infertility

2. Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is a condition that also refers to the endometrium overgrowth. However, the endometrium affects the uterus itself. It occurs when the inner uterine lining grows inside the uterine walls. This leads to the uterine thickening and pelvic pressure.

Due to the fact that adenomyosis can develop because of the increased estrogen levels, it can disappear after menopause when the estrogen levels decrease. However, if the condition is severe, it may require treatment. The most common treatment options for adenomyosis include pain medication, hormonal therapy, and surgery. Type of treatment usually depends on the severity of symptoms and the size of the affected area.

3. Uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that develop in the uterus. Despite the fact that they are not cancerous, they may require timely and proper treatment. The reality is that small fibroids can develop without symptoms until they become large. You should also know that fibroids can grow abnormally (even to the melon size) and cause pressure in the pelvis due to their size.

If you were diagnosed with large fibroids, it is better to consult your doctor about the available treatment. The most common fibroid treatment options include medication (hormonal treatment) and surgery. However, certain home remedies and lifestyle changes like losing weight and a healthy diet can also help prevent the development of the fibroids.

4. UTI

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a quite common condition that affects both men and women. In most cases, UTI develops in the urethra and bladder (the lower tract). However, it can also affect urethras and kidneys (the upper tract). The infection usually causes abnormal urine color and odor, pain during urination, increased frequency of urination, and pelvic pressure.

Treatment options for UTI depend on the type of pathogens that cause it. If the infection was caused by bacteria, it can be treated with antibiotics. In the case of viral or fungal origin of UTI, antiviral and antifungal medications are usually used.

5. Ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacks that occur in the ovaries. Despite the fact that ovarian cysts themselves are not considered dangerous, they can cause severe complications like an ovarian torsion and ovarian cyst rupture. In these cases, you should visit an emergency room immediately.
Ovarian cysts may disappear without treatment but in some women, they can grow quite large. In this case, an ovarian cyst may cause severe pain and pelvic pressure. Ovarian cysts can be treated with the help of birth control pills (hormonal therapy), laparoscopy, and laparotomy (surgical treatment).
