“On March 1, 1919, a crowd gathered in Pagoda Park in downtown Seoul to hear proclaimed that “Korea is an independent state and Koreans are a self-governing people.” That statement, known as the March 1 declaration, came in direct defiance of Japanese rule, which had begun in 1910.
