Soul Food y Adobo - Coloring Page

Soul Food y Adobo - Coloring Page

Aug 20, 2020

More than listing several puerto-rican dishes, I think the song "Soul Food y Adobo" is about the joy of gathering people around the table to share good times. So for this drawing I took the table outside for a block party with the neighbors.

Everything was so delicious that people ate everything and now that salsa music is blastin', it's time to dance to some familiar tunes from back home.

There is laughter, children playing (and crying), pigeons sipping juice and Princess Nokia enjoys the scene with her food baby. Her abuela also saved some leftovers and prepared a bag with tupperwares for her granddaughter to take home. Take care of yourself, mija.

The backdrop is based on real NYC buildings, where the tradition of gathering the neighbors goes as far as the 1860s. This is also Princess Nokia's city. Her poetry has so many references about this palce. Sometimes listening to her music feels like I'm watching a movie - especially when I listen to Green Line from 1992 album.

I have never been to New York, but I lived in London for 3 years (2016-2019) and this drawing also reflects my experience of living in a busy city. From signs of pollution, - cigarette butts, cans and bottles on the street - insecurity, - notice someone tried to break the bars on the main entrance of the building next to the restaurant - and apartment buildings that are in not-so-good condition. In the back there is a big modern skycrapper accentuating the contrasts between boroughs, often next to each other.

But today is a day for celebration! People are taking a break from their worries, stepping out of the house and sharing love with the community. The block is open and there is so much diversity - the best part of living in a big city.

While living abroad, I understood the meaning of "melting pot" and was proudly part of it. Almost no one is originally from this place but everyone belongs because it is a city of transplants. So when you come to this place, you find your family here.

I wanted to recreate this diversity by drawing people from various age groups, genders, races. Now you decide their colors :)

Welcome to the neighborhood. We'll clean the dishes in the end 🤰
