irecently wrote a piece that started out just innocently romanticizing oldey-timey photography and ended up kinda raging against the digital machine. I do have what I think are legitimate concerns about how quickly we’re abandoning the less-versatile but simpler and more robust analog communications technologies in favor of digital. When I think about those fears, I also immediately start thinking about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence. I’m not referring to the inevitable robot uprising that will crush humanity like the pathetic bugs we are under it’s shiny steel feet. That’s the next generation’s problem. I’m more concerned right now about how we’re building neural nets designed to mimic functions of the human brain, and teaching them how to have imaginations.

This is the technology where the deep-faking of real human faces and voices comes from, and while that’s all really neat (like for real, it’s really neat) it’s also utterly terrifying to someone who really appreciates the value of objective truth in a time and place where half the population of my home country can look at the sky and say “it’s blue” while the other half can look at the very same sky and say “fuck you cuck libtard”.
