I'm currently working on my 20th First Contact novel, entitled Clowns, and it's a killer... I love exploring off-beat alternative forms of First Contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence.
I don't think our Hollywood tropes are going to stand. Movies tend to approach First Contact either as a World War II style conflict with clearly defined good guys and bad guys—and like all tropes, the bad guys are unmistakable and unredeemable. On those rare occasions Hollywood has benevolent aliens they're god-like. That's to say, they're not just omnipotent and omniscient, they also move in mysterious ways. Neither of these accurately represents what is likely to happen. So what is likely... ah, you'll have to wait for Clowns :)
