Cold Eyes

Jul 13, 2021

Cold Eyes is a tribute to a science fiction classic, The Mote in God's Eye. It's been really interesting looking at the science behind possible lifeforms on an alien world and thinking about how their cultures might develop, particularly in light of the limitations on their world. The planet is a "cold eye," a scientific term that describes a planet orbiting so close to its parent star that it's tidally locked (similar to how the Moon is locked to Earth, always facing it). As the parent star is a (cool) red dwarf, the planet can orbit closer than Mercury and yet still only get roughly as much energy as Earth. Being tidally locked, the far side would be ice-bound while the daytime side would have liquid water. I've imagined a ring of mountains surrounding a sea three times the size of the Pacific.

Keep your eyes peeled as this novel will be available in Sept 2021.
