I was around when the Internet turned up and chatrooms became this exciting magnetic universe that sucked you right in and messed with your mind.
Nobody outright believed anyone was who they said they were. Deep meaningful conversations with people were a-plenty, but you always held a bit back just in case the other person was in role-play.
Those early internet days were a big costume party.
Chatrooms have given way to a whole variety of social media platforms now - they all have their own flavour but I think they're all still kind of a costume party.
