Why does anonymity and encryption matter?

We live in an age where Journalism has never been more important.

And never under greater threat.

If an investigative Journalist's source does not feel both anonymous (Tor, proxying hops), and secure (encryption), the integrity of a given conversation may be compromised.

Result: said story would never be written (key to a free society is an informed public).

We should all have these rights -- whether we feel we need this or not, respect for humanity means being able to selectively reveal ourselves to others. Surveillance capitalism can be seen as an assault on humanity. A direct attack, modifying behavior: personal autonomy, liberty, free expression...

Let's normalize the 'choice' of online anonymity once again (internet can never truly be a "free and open" safe place for everyone, until we have the right to choose who and what we reveal to others).

➑️ INSTALL FLATPAK MESSENGERS (SANDBOXING)

FLATPAK

TOR FLATPAKS: USE INTERNAL PROXY SETTINGS TO USE TOR CLIENT (SEE BELOW EXAMPLE)

(or, for all pkgs: hardware Tor router, Tor gateway machine/VM, TailsOS, Whonix, anonsurf as other anonymizing setup options [covered coming up])

PREPARATION

INSTALL TOR CLIENT (must be running for torifying)

Debian (PoP!_OS, Ubuntu, Kali, Parrot, Mint)

sudo apt update && apt install tor -y

Arch (EndeavourOS, Manjaro, Artix)

pacman -S tor

START TOR CLIENT (must be running for torifying)

Starting Tor Client:

sudo systemctl start tor

Making Tor Client Start Every Boot:

sudo systemctl enable tor

TOR SETTINGS IN GAJIM FLATPAK (EXAMPLE)

Step 1: Open Preferences

Step 2: Advanced -> Global Proxy

(follow similar for messenger choices; if not a flatpak, edit shortcut as in Dino example on video)

πŸ” πŸ§… Proxy Settings (applies to all Tor client proxying):

Proxy Type: SOCKS

IP: 127.0.0.1

TCP port: 9050

(for the above, make sure to first follow the instructions to start Tor client above at: "PREPARATION")

DINO (XMPP): Dino doesn't offer proxy options, but we have a Solution ! πŸ™‚ Try either torify / torsocks, or proxychains [edit desktop shortcut] for standard applications like Dino (not flatpaks) by changing shortcut to launcher [as shown on video], to execute:

proxychains dino %U

(replacing proxychains with torify, torsocks if you like)

If you use the above (β˜‘οΈ check off: "run in terminal" to watch it connect to proxy / tor) for making encrypted messengers anonymous, you should see the following in terminal (connecting proxychains-ng through Tor proxy):

If you follow Dino example with proxychains, enable proxy_dns in: /etc/proxychains.conf

(shown below)

SETUP/S COVERED IN VIDEO

Sandboxing: Flatpaks contain everything you need to run a given app, inside restricted sandbox.

-- large security increase including non-root sandboxing of Bubblewrap (see below)

-- some other messaging app setups have been exploited through message previews - we utilize sandboxing to prevent various forms of exploitation (ex: some messaging apps have been exploited through message / link / file previews -- with exploitive code)

-- sandboxing: taking advantage of the ease of "Flatseal" (defaults are restricted nicely)

Torify / Proxychains: the option to torify, and / or combine chain of proxies (Tor is all you need)

-- allows for multiple layers of connection separation (up to you)

-- encryption between each hop + e2ee inside encrypted messenger, to protect integrity / privacy

Modified Shortcuts: We can create shortcuts for select applicatons, modify original command to include proxying choices.

Perfect way to communicate with others, however you like online: securely, privately / anonymously, encrypted -- selectively revealing ourselves to others.

You may or may not wish to share with someone else your name, but this should remain a choice (hence example setup).

For ethical Human Rights purposes. Our devices and conversations deserve to remain secure. Without choice of selective privacy / anonymity, we cannot call ourselves "free"...
