Hello everyone,
I try to fit in beginning Linux content, as I want everyone to be able to follow future videos. π
Today we get started with Vim and Nano.
This content is how I would like beginner content to go: just what is needed to get started (don't be intimidated by Vim, it can be fun to learn something new).
Vim can speed up certain work (once you get the hang of it).
One reason I suggest learning Vim is the 'universality' of it. Vi has been found on UNIX systems for decades, and to this day it is rare to happen across a UNIX / Linux based system without it.
Along the way I include personal learning tips (can be applied to other topics).

NEW LEARNING TIPS
π TIP #1: Take Notes During Video. Pause where you need to. Taking notes helps connect our memory to the subject we are learning. This may not sound like much, but note taking really makes the difference when picking up a new subject. We tend to remember better, those things we physically write down.
TIP #2: ποΈ Post notes (or printed cheatsheet) on a corkboard as a work desk reference. This offers more chances to practice.
TIP #3: Try the vimtutor command. Great way to get into practice with vim.
TIP #4: Practice. Practice. Practice. "Practice makes perfect" they say (they aren't wrong).
No substitute for putting what you learn into practice. One way you can pickup both Nano and Vim, is to start using them in your daily activities. Practice Idea: Writing notes? Writing an email? Write in Vim!
TIP #5: Use terminal / commandline for activities you would normally not. This is somewhat unrelated to the video subject at hand, but personally, we learn more when I forced to do this.
Backstory: When I started using Linux / UNIX operating systems, installation / setup was an entirely different experience. Today, we have many excuses not to use the terminal (ample point and click configuration options, etc).
In the past I tried looking positively at moments 'startx' failed to start X Windows. Changing my perspective, seeing these moments a learning 'opportunity'. Leading to a better understanding of more 'under the hood'.
Look up ways to perform daily activities in the terminal / shell. You will be surprised how quickly you can get things done on commandline, once you have a grasp on it.
