Continuing this privacy/sec operating systems series we move from Qubes, Tails, Whonix over to Pop OS! Great choice for beginners and experts alike.
I needed a distribution to install on my internal drive after many weeks of surviving on a Tails OS USB (which I will continue using, but sometimes we need a disk install!)
Above we download System76's Pop OS and learn to use checksums to evaluate file integrity.
This is a rather important thing to learn as files can be manipulated. Not only on a server, but also in mid download! There are additional ways to further check integrity we will cover in future videos.
TIP FOR CHECKSUMS: If relying on checksums for integrity checking, it is ideal to find them on a server outside the download itself.
Why? If the download server were compromised, it could potentially contain bad checksums.
One 3rd party website for finding for a specific distributions current checksum, would be the Linux project's git page (ie: github/gitlab/gitea)

CHECKSUMS: REAL EXAMPLE FROM LINUX HISTORY
Years ago Linux Mint's server was remotely broken into. The Mint download image that day (not now!) contained a backdoor (To be clear: THEN, not now)! This affected users that day, and thankfully since then, they have had no further problems.
I was even a daily driver Linux Mint user at the time, but not a victim. I still love Linux Mint and highly recommend it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I'm not looking to tarnish their (well deserved) good name. This could have happened to any Linux distribution. Any download. These things happen, but remain a reminder why checksum integrity (along with PGP signature integrity) is vital to understand.
I recommend Linux Mint as another beginning Linux option today. It was a consideration for this series.
Including a real world example feels important.
The point is, these things can happen on ANY server. The next download you make could be backdoored at anytime. It could come through a MITM (Man in the middle) or a file replacement.
And as my video (below) on "watch out for hidden code" demonstrates, the file itself could remove evidence of itself ever existing: after sharing sensitive information (such as in the mac address example I created using base64 to mask the original script)
