Encryption/Privacy Matters: What Happens ...

Encryption/Privacy Matters: What Happens To Your Data? [Supporter Early Access]

Jul 14, 2021

Hello friends,

I wrote this as a primer: "why privacy/anonymity" article.

Will become public later on.

(UPDATE: Now Public)

My hope is to get people thinking, to encourage more personal awareness in their own privacy/data protection practices.

I'd like you to use your imagination (partially) here. We can learn from history.

Our data is going to be used in ways we never realized. And that data collection is going to seep into every part of life via the 4th Industrial Revolution (#IoT, #4IR).

This is why it is important to pay attention to practices today.

Privacy is #12 in the United Nations (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 12

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

"Cryptowars"

The Cryptowars references dispute/activism taking place during the 1990's: a standoff of sorts between those wanting to see encryption become 'illegal' (regulated and further as non-export "munitions" (imagine that?!)), and those on the side of Human Rights wanting to protect fundamental Freedoms, Civil Liberties, Human Rights and basic dignity (those known as:"cypherpunks").

The Cryptowars are back.

"Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world."

-Eric Hughes (A Cypherpunk's Manifesto)

This year (2021), June 6th, the author of PGP (Phil Zimmermann) had to speak out on long ranging implications for backdoors in encryption, and the vital nature of preserving end-to-end encryption- for Human Rights, as well as for protecting governments from technical adversaries:

"I wanted PGP to be used for human rights applications. I wanted it to spread all over the world, especially to places where people needed protection...

It's not only personal freedom at stake. It's national security. The reckless deployment of Huawei 5G infrastructure across Europe has created easy opportunities for Chinese SIGINT. End-to-end encryption products are essential for European national security, to counter a hostile SIGINT environment controlled by China. We must push back hard in policy space to preserve the right to end-to-end encryption."

-Phil Zimmermann

A Note On The Above:

The end statement, where Phil Zimmerman mentions "pushing back hard in policy space to preserve the right to end-to-end encryption," he is referring to end-to-end encryption's ability to protect information, even whilst traveling through potentially "adversarial networks."

In Current Events:

Recently, in #Chatcontrol hashtag has been floating around. This concerns recently passed legislation in Europe allowing the mass collection of European citizen personal conversations/messages using private corporations.

Sets dangerous precedents. We have yet to see how the AI will apply this in practice. Or who the data may be sold to.

This is the reality (on the importance) of encryption. Without an ability to encrypt information we live in a world where the highest earners buy public perception using personal data across spectrum/platform. Microtargeting, predetermining, influencing behavior/belief.

There's already authoring of political belief. Most still don't even know it.

Behavior 'preauthoring' is already taking place in various sectors under the justification of "defensive measures." In the format of the world as an "information warfare battleground".

Free will? Or can this be manipulated via combination of learned experiences, carefully crafted repetitive sensory/media/stimuli..

Are you a free thinker? Are you sure you would be able to tell?

Debunking

How It's Advertised:

"Nothing to hide, nothing to fear."

Reality:

  • Journalists, Human Rights activists and others are put into position where exporting the truth in a story could get them killed. A post truth world: where we subconsciously make decisions based on 'algorithmic reward and punishment reinforcements.'

  • Actual Studies show "surveillance": "breeds fear, self censorship, and meekness."
    Source: https://theintercept.com/2016/04/28/new-study-shows-mass-surveillance-breeds-meekness-fear-and-self-censorship/

  • Data sold (via data brokers) shapes our politics, collapsing democratic principles.

  • Data sold goes thru highly experienced psychological operations specialists (privately funded) using long practiced "microtargeting" techniques to individualize emotional states/online experiences in order to shape behavior (even future decisions) on mass scale (not only advertising).

  • Data induced microtargeting and associated social media amplification can manifest everything from artificially fueled division... even violence.
(as hard as this might be to recognize for many).

  • Personal online data is privatized and sold to our Health Insurance Companies, potential employers, "expanded social media background checks", banking. Creating inorganic changes in behavior/speech, stifling open expression and healthy, natural political debate.

  • Social Credit Scores can be said to be "a thing". Privatized. We call them the "algorithms" and they play a part in whether subjects of content/comments are seen/buried/"shadow banned." Society is already starting to feel the consequences (a "post truth" world built on psychological microtargeting).

  • Creativity thrives in open, free flowing environments, in tune with open expression and civil liberties. Attacks on encryption provide the exact opposite.
(creativity experiences a "die off" under restrictive environments)

  • Political winds shift. What once was acceptable may one day change. What the future holds for today's personal data is still unknown.

How It's Advertised:

"A encryption "masterkey"/"key escrow" only accessible by those with the authority."

Reality:

Reality:

Without activism/advocacy, we would not have the Human Rights we have today. And without advocacy we will not have a right to privacy.

That much at this point we can be sure of.
