So Hey Peter, what are you doing to get inspired? Oh, I'm just sitting here waiting for it to come to me. No! That's the wrong answer. I'm going to tell you why it's the wrong answer.
What am I talking about here? Well, we often look at things, and we say, oh, I'm just waiting for inspiration to strike, or any moment now, it's going to happen any day. I'm going to find that project. And it is going to present itself to me, and I'm just going to get working with it.
Yeah, that's probably not going to happen. Sorry to break the bubble, but that's probably not going to happen realistically, to find inspiration. You have got to do just that. You have got to find it now. It's easy to say that. And it isn't easy to do, but if it were easy, well then, the reward wouldn't be so great. Right?
Now. What can you do to find inspiration? Well, of course, it very much depends on what you're looking to do. I'm going to use me as an example.
If I'm looking to take some photographs and maybe I've got an idea, I don't know how to start it. Or, I'm not finding a way to make that idea a reality. I need to get inspired as to how it's going to work.
For example, I'm fascinated by old buildings. Are you fascinated by old buildings? I love old buildings. Maybe it's because I'm from England with ancient churches, old towns, and buildings. I don't know, but I remember as a kid just going to castles and in awe of them.
I remember being a kid, and I think it was even probably pre-teenager. I had one of those tiny 110 cameras. Do you remember the 110 camera? It was a flat thing with a cartridge film that goes in the back.
I was in awe at a castle, I wish I could remember its name to this day, but I don't. I think it was in Wales. We were on vacation, and I took this photograph. To this day, it's still one of my all-time favorite photographs that I've taken.
Because it was just a moment that I caught on film that resonated with me, there was just something about it. It's not a technically brilliant image in any way. I've been looking for it for years; I haven't found it, but I know I've got it somewhere.
It inspires me to this day because I've never been able to recreate that moment in a picture of an old building. So I'm always looking to try and chase that dream.
The only way I'm going to do that is to go out, see old buildings, and get inspired. Maybe that'll inspire me because I'll see something completely different from what I intended. The point is that I'm going out and hunting it down.
This approach can apply to whatever your creative endeavor is. You have got to go looking for that inspiration. You have got to search, and you have got to figure out what that means to you.
Suppose you wait for it to come to you. It might, but I don't think it'll be as good. And I think you'll be staying longer, and it may never turn up either.
So, I guess what I'm saying is. Get out there. Right. To find the inspiration you need. Turnover, whatever proverbial rock, you have to turn over to find your motivation because it will generate better work in the end. Doing our best work is also what inspires us the most to carry on. So it has a knock-on effect.
It starts the water at the top of the stream. That then goes down the stream across a river, down a waterfall into the ocean.
But we have to start that process to get the journey moving.
