How did Qué Pasa Oaxaca start?

Sep 13, 2022

The events calendar has always been at the heart of our project, and it was with this that Qué Pasa Oaxaca started.

When I arrived in Oaxaca in 2012, I found myself in a city brimming with cultural activities. It felt like every time I stepped out of the house there was an art exhibition, live music, film screenings etc. The problem was, that I didn't know how to find out about these events before leaving the house.

In those days, there was a great magazine called El Jolgorio, and they published a monthly calendar of events. However, because it was printed, and because Oaxaca operates in a very last-minute way, it was limited. There was also an online calendar in English, but it was missing many of the more alternative events that I was interested in.

So, I decided to create a digital events calendar that included all the events that I was interested in going to. Even though I didn't have any experience in this, I thought (perhaps naively), that it couldn´t be that hard to build a website, and this is how Qué Pasa Oaxaca was born - first in English and then also in Spanish.

On our calendar, we publish cultural events such as theatre, live music, art exhibitions, literary presentations, dance, film screenings and more. We've always wanted to provide space for alternative, independent, and lesser-known events and projects. There are places that everyone knows from their guide books but Oaxaca is so much more than that, and that's what we wanted, and want, to show. We've also always held a preference for free or low-cost events that are accessible to more people.

So, if you're in Oaxaca and looking for things to do, check out our calendar. We update it every day so you'll always find something interesting to do.

Abrazos,

Rebecca
