"Burning bridges" series

Aug 31, 2022

I often question what it means to "burn" a bridge in personal and professional relationships. Growing up, I was taught to treat other people the way I wanted to be treated. Otherwise, any harmful behavior on my part could burn bridges with loved ones who I would need for support later down the road.

Today though, the concept seems different. If you simply speak up for yourself or set a boundary, society will quickly remind you not to burn bridges. You're expected to be cordial with known abusers for fear of what might happen if you get on their bad side. With this logic, are we setting ourselves up for a lifetime of walking on eggshells? Do we really need to maintain bridges that were unstable from the beginning?

The next series explores these questions and more. Look out for a new post each Wednesday!
