Raging Rolls Player Profile - Mark

Jan 04, 2022

It's time to meet Mark, Raging Rolls feline friend and swashbuckler extraordinaire! Hi Mark 👋

How long have you been playing D&D and how did you get into it / get started?

D&D was on my radar for a while before I started playing. It had featured on Stranger Things and Big Bang Theory, it wasn’t until I went into a game store looking for a birthday present, where I spotted a sign saying they hold intro nights that got my curious. I watched a couple of Acquisitions Incorporates sessions on YouTube, given the Big Bang Theory / Wil Weaton connection, and saw how much FUN everyone appeared to be having. The sign also indicated “if you’d watched Critical Role…” which sent me on a journey. It wasn’t long before I was hooked, and decided to take the plunge.

Decided to try it out with Dave, at the game shop in the city. Unfortunately while I was told a DM would likely take us under their wing, there were none available that might. Just as we were about to leave and try it again another night, a random bloke showed up and was hoping to play, but agreed to DM for us. What ensued was a hilarious oneshot.

Before long, we were on the hunt for a local group, and started making connections through game stores, Facebook and friends and family. Our group arose as we were all locals looking to play, and we’re lucky we found each other just before COVID took hold and forced our game online, where it has made things easier in some respects.

Tell us about your favourite PC you’ve played and what made it so great

I’m fond of all my main characters - Claymore the Human Paladin, Garri the Monk Gnome, and Raef the Tabaxi Rune Knight.

I loved Claymore’s physicality mixed with some magical options and his preference for using Hold Person and Compelled Duel for intimidating low level NPCs. Garri is an abrasive SOAB, and Raef is just good fun to play.

If you DM, what’s your best tip for future DM’s out there? (Or equivalent for a player)

As a player - work out your why. Why will your character will react in certain ways, or what is driving them forward. That way you can separate the player from the character.

What’s one epic moment you can recall from one of your games?

My first game involved having to tame 3 animal topiaries in order to trim them, so as to win favour with someone. As our first game, with characters we didn’t really know, it required some real out of the box thinking regarding how to succeed on the challenge. I believe we got one of the topiaries drunk with a keg of ale we watered it with, and some similar shenanigans for the others. It was a riot, and was the start of a 3 year journey of awesome story telling with friends old and new.
