Toshio Okada cleared up the questions of "Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0"

Dec 03, 2020

"Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0" has been a hot topic of discussion with many questions. It seems that the contents of a video site by Toshio Okada are being talked about as "too shocking".

Speaking of Toshio Okada, he is famous these days for his dieting-related topics, but he was originally the president of the animation production company Gainax, and he has been a member of the "Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise" and "Gunbuster" and "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water".

Okada Toshio and Anno Hideaki, the director of Eva, met when they were in college and worked together on independent anime and live-action special effects films. Those days are described in detail in Kazuhiko Shimamoto's manga Aoi Honō, which you should read if you're interested. It's interesting to see what the members of Gainax were doing when they were younger.

Later, Hideaki Anno made his directorial debut with Gunbuster, produced by Toshio Okada. He followed that up with "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water," and became a famous creator. Now, as the director of Evangelion, he has produced a string of blockbuster hits.

What did Toshio Okada think of Anno's latest film, Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0? At the beginning of his talk, he said, "For me, animation is not about finding the right answer, but it's more important to find out how interesting it is to talk about. If the director listens to me, he might say that's not true, but I would think 'this one is more interesting'," he prefaced his speech by emphasizing that it is just his imagination. On that basis, he spoke of his own interpretation of the following.

Questions

1. Why did Fuyutsuki play Japanese chess with Shinji?

Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0 has a running time of only 95 minutes, so there is no room for unnecessary scenes. Nevertheless, the scene in which Fuyutsuki and Shinji play Japanese chess is used liberally. This is because this scene has an important meaning. Then, what meaning is implied in this scene?

2. What makes Fuyutsuki followed Gendo?

Why does only Fuyutsuki continue to support Gendo while Nerv collapses and the original members form Wille dislike Gendo?

3. What is Gendo's purpose in trying to bring Yui back to life?

Fourteen years after the "Rebuild of Evangelion: 2.0" world and nearly 30 years after Yui's death, why is Gend still insisting on Yui's resurrection? What is he going to do after bringing Yui back to life?

Answers

1. Shinji Ikari was not Gendo's son.

The scene where Fuyutsuki and Shinji play Japanese chess is synonymous with the scene where father and son play catch. In other words, it implies that Fuyutsuki and Shinji have a father-son relationship. Fuyutsuki is Shinji's biological father and therefore he has a picture of Yui, which even Gendo doesn't have anymore. This is also why Gendo is cold towards Shinji.

2.Fuyutsuki has the feeling of guilt against Gendo.

Fuyutsuki has a guilty conscience towards Gendou because he had a relationship with Yui. Therefore, he feels that he has a responsibility to be Gendo's loyal ally to the end.

3.Gendou wants to ask Yui for the truth.

Gendo is slightly aware that Shinji is not his son, but he is still not sure who his father is. So, he tries to bring Yui back to life to find out who Shinji's biological father is in person.

Predictions on next movie

  • Gendo becomes a pilot of an Eva.

In the next movie, Gendou, the Eva pilot, and the giant Yui have a violent battle.

Gendou: I know you're cheating on me! I won't allow you!

Yui: I know you're sleeping around with female staff in Nerv!

Then Fuyutsuki gets involved and a powerful lover's quarrel breaks out.

Shinji sees it and gets pissed off. It's a truly difficult situation.

  • Misato dies

Anno has a tendency to gradually reduce the number of characters. Misato, whose role is almost over, can die in the next film.

  • Mari is Gendo's ex-girlfriend

Mari was actually dating Gendou in the past. The movie ends with the reveal of their respective romantic relationships.

Conclusion

Eva was a soap opera that portrayed a love/hate play between a man and a woman.

So, this is how Toshio Okada interpreted "Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0", which is an incredibly bold thought. I've never imagined that Shinji was Fuyutsuki's son. I never thought of that. It's so unexpected that it's fun. Lol.
