A Post Just For You - What Is Your Why?

Dec 26, 2020

What is your why?

Not who. What.

People come and go and even when they don't they have their own set of problems and circumstances that they deal with every day. Setting the responsibility of your existence on a single person can be detrimental.

So...what is your why?

Maybe you are wondering what I mean by that. What is your why means why are you here? Why do you make that decision every day to do your best to thrive instead of just survive? And some days, when just surviving seems to be almost too much, what keeps you going? What gets you out of bed?

If every single person in your life had died when you woke up tomorrow, what would you do? How would you function?

What would be your why?

When you have your answer, then you can honestly tell yourself that this is what is important to you.

Yes I know, I took friends and family out of the equation. But there is a reason for that.

That is because this post is just about you. It's just for you. It's not for what you do for other people or what they do for you.

What makes you happy? What lights a fire inside you? What is that thing that you still have energy to do even after a long awful day? Those are the things that no one can take away from you. Your passions are your constant and most caring friends, and you will choose to abandon them long before they ever abandon you.

If you consistently do this thing or things that bring you joy, if you often answer the universe's call of 'why', then that is excellent! Keep it up, because it is vital to your mental health and wellbeing.

If you find yourself always tired, always doing for others and putting yourself last, let's take a moment to analyze this...

If a well goes dry, where will those people get their water from? The same goes for you. If you give and give so much and never refill your own needs and desires, one day that well of goodness is going to run out. There won't be any more to give to anyone else because you will be tired, sick and burned out.

The most selfless people have to make it a habit to be 'selfish' sometimes. (Even though it isn't selfish at all to take care of yourself, it is a requirement for a fulfilling life!) This time of year (and especially this year), a lot of people are burned out and exhausted. Everyone has had a weird, tiring year. Take some time for yourself before the holidays run out to renew and revitalize yourself. It doesn't even have to be anything crazy. Do something every day that brings you joy. The possibilities are endless! Go take some pictures on a nature hike. Play an instrument or sing. Start working on a business plan you've been thinking up. Call up an old friend. Go to your favorite bookstore and pick out a book (or a lot of books if you're me) that catches your eye.

Do something today just because.

Just because it brings you joy.

That is your why.
