A Sicilian soundscape

A Sicilian soundscape

Nov 23, 2021

As the sounds of my Sicilian town come in through my windows they punctuate my daily routine with their regularity. From church bells at certain times, to children rushing from home to school morning and afternoon. To speeding motorini and greetings being yelled from one balcony to the next. Whether I like it or not the external goings-on of little town life encroach and become a part of me.

Slowly through the years of living in Sicily, I have pieced together a small part of the intricate social puzzle of the community I live in. Most Sicilians are born with and grow within their own social network, not the modern ones we are so familiar with but the ones that existed long before the internet. The knowledge and connection between family, friends and the wider community give them such an in-depth knowledge of the world around them. The extended community 'family tree' that many migrants took with them to their new homes all around the world gave them a lifetime of wisdom and strength.

Today's post on my blog Sicily Inside and Out is about, how I began putting the pieces together.

Read more about the world that gradually slips in through the window of my small house in Sicily here.
