I get my peaches from Sicily ...

Aug 02, 2021

If you've been looking at my stories on Instagram you may have noticed how I've been enjoying the peach season in Sicily this year. I really do love this time of year because of its abundance of summer fruit because Italy has the best seasonal fruit and vegetables!

My favourite variety has to be the Tabacchere or Saturn peaches.

A case of Tabacchere is a generous gift a real luxury and can cost up to three times the price of regular peaches. A house drenched in the perfume of these peaches is a sensual pleasure filled with the sweetness of summer sunshine, which lingers in the air and in the mouth.

Also known as snuffbox and tango or doughnut peaches Tabacchere have been grown on the slopes of Mount Etna since the early 1800s. The rich volcanic soil and the sunshine make these peaches thrive.

Since they do not keep for long and due to their odd size they are generally consumed locally during the short growing season. They ripen quickly and are very odd shaped and fragile so it is difficult to find them out of Sicily.

Hence my endless ode to these peaches!

Read my bonus post dedicated to these peaches and another even more rare variety I managed to taste. Just click over onto my bio to see.

Hope you have a beautiful week.

With love from Sicily.
