Manifestations of ADHD: How to Spot the Symptoms

Aug 29, 2021

Several indications can confirm our doubts about having ADHD. Most people with ADHD describe their experience as that of being driven by a motor.

There is always a feeling of restlessness, coupled with distraction, which prevents one from concentrating on the task at hand. One might also find themselves behaving recklessly or making rash decisions. Some of the symptoms associated with ADHD are-

· Trouble in concentrating on complicated tasks

· An inability to focus on conversations

· Frequently losing their possessions

· Lack of organizational skills

· Frequent forgetfulness

· Restless, fidgety behavior and hyperactivity

· Talking excessively or speaking too loudly all of a sudden

· Lacking patience

· Tendency to interrupt mid-conversation

· Constantly changing activity

· Emotional difficulties like sudden irritability, low self-esteem, hypersensitivity, among others

While there is no common consensus on the causes behind ADHD, it is usually considered a combination of environment and genes and the wiring of our brains. ADHD can often go unrecognized in childhood, and even in adulthood, because of unfamiliarity and a general misunderstanding about the nature of the disorder. People with ADHD are often labeled as apathetic, unmotivated, and lazy. It becomes challenging to diagnose in high-functioning individuals who have mastered the ability to mask their ADHD by specific adaptive strategies.

Through self-reflection and retrospective recall of the symptoms associated with ADHD, we can recognize the disorder and understand the true extent of the economic and social burden of ADHD.
