Well that was FUN!
A few months back, I got an email from a member of the Stillwater Amateur Radio Association (SARA) letting me know that they were putting together a POTA meetup at a nearby Minnesota State Park. Without knowing anyone from the club, I said "absolutely! I'll be there." Man, I'm glad I made it. It was an absolute blast.
I got to meet quite a few people and see some pretty nice setups. It's always fun to see other portable operators portable setups. Seems everyone does something a little bit different, so there's always a chance to pick up a new hack or see a piece of equipment.
If you're in a club that isn't very active, try to get one of these organized. If you can't get the momentum going with your club, keep an eye out for one being put on by another club.... actually even if you get the momentum going with your club, keep an eye out for other meetups.
SARA has a cool thing going
SARA has quite a few members who enjoy POTA, they even pull data from the POTA website to track each other's activator and hunter stats. With that they have monthly and annual club contests amongst themselves. How cool is that?!
Beautiful Day at a Beautiful Park Along a Beautiful River
If you ever get the chance and you're the area, Wild River State Park should be on your to see list. Located just north of the Twin Cities metro area on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix River, this is a very nice park to visit. Lots of camping locations, large picnic areas and miles and miles of hiking trails. Plus the site has some interesting history from the logging days along the river.
