A Guide to Buying a Sewing Machine You Know Nothing About

May 03, 2022

Things to consider when purchasing a sewing machine that’s not for you

Buying gifts can sometimes be a stressful experience, particularly if you don’t know what the other person wants. Truth be told, it can be even more stressful when you have the perfect present in mind.. but have no idea what it is or how it works.

For any seamstress, dressmaker, or artist, a sewing machine is often a favourite piece of kit, so purchasing the right product can be very difficult for someone with little knowledge. So, what's the best way to go about this? What are the do’s and don'ts and above all, how do you know if it’s the right one?

Pay for what you can afford

The prices of sewing machines can vary, so it’s important to have a budget in mind. When thinking of a price, consider its features and if it benefits the person you’re purchasing for.

For a little more guidance, don’t opt for unknown brands. Do your research and check out reviews or blogs regarding user experience.

Check the warranty period

Warranty certificates speak volumes about the brand and its product. If the warranty period is over two years, then that can be an indication of the brand’s confidence in the performance of its product. In short, the longer the warranty, the better the performance.

Best of all, your gift is also covered from any eventuality.

Consider the user’s sewing experience

Is this their first sewing machine or are they simply looking to upgrade?

Sewing machines have significantly progressed over the years but there’s no point in purchasing a sewing machine that’s all singing and dancing if only a handful of features will be used. Answering these types of questions will give you an indication of the type of sewing machine you’re looking to purchase.

What do they intend to use the sewing machine for?

This is a great indicator in deciding the make and model. For example, some use a sewing machine to customise jackets, while others may use it for general clothing repairs. Knowing what they intend to use the sewing machine for determines the type of sewing machine you should purchase.

Let’s take Brother sewing machines as an example. Their brand ticks all the relevant criteria, but there are various makes and models for all sorts of tasks. If the user isn’t into embroidery, then a sewing machine with 120+ embroidery patterns is not the best product for you.

Consider the user’s abilities

Does the user struggle with their vision or do they find it difficult threading the needle? Some sewing machines offer special features which make the sewing process easier to complete such as automatic needle threaders, lighting, and so forth. If the user struggles with simple tasks or even finds it a little frustrating, perhaps paying more for a handier sewing machine is best.

Final thoughts

When buying a sewing machine, it’s all about usability and functionality.

Researching sewing machines can be a tedious task, but to help ease the process, always purchase from a company that is trustworthy and offers friendly guidance.

When visiting a store/supplier, consider how they pitch the product. Some are simply trained to know the sales spec of their product range and will therefore pitch sewing machines based on their price point and spec. Others will refer to the ins and outs of the machine's operatives and may refer to user experience. Opt for the one that offers the most transparency.

If you come across a more knowledgeable supplier, then they will more than likely keep your machine in tip-top condition for years to come.
