Interior Design Trends for 2022

May 03, 2022

If you are considering refreshing or refurbishing your interiors this year then there are some interior design cliches you will want to avoid to make sure your interiors are as modern and tasteful as possible. Of course, you will need to make the final decision as to whether something is of good taste or not, and if you love a design that other people think is not fashionable then you should still feel free to incorporate it into your home style.

If you are not too worried about stamping a unique personality into your interior design and simply want to keep things fresh and clean looking, then there are plenty of design options available to you in terms of style and colour choices. Again, interior design styles are intensely personal, and something that you think looks great and works well with your lifestyle might be someone else’s idea of an interior design nightmare.

WIth that said, let’s explore some of the most popular and stylish interior design trends of 2022. Hopefully you will then have a clearer idea of what you’d like to include in your own home as you remodel!

Authentic, modernised rustic country style

Shabby chic and country looks are finally on their way out. While we still love some aspects of the look, in 2022 it’s more about creating authentic spaces. For example, rather than choosing a brand new rug that looks worn, try shopping around for a genuine vintage piece that actually is well worn. This will give your interiors a tastefully rustic feel without coming across as tacky. Scour the market for genuine country style tables and chairs instead of ones that have purposefully been given a used look in the factory.

Buy this furniture brand new and wear it in yourself, or again look to the second hand and vintage market to bring authenticity to your informal country style spaces. This is not to say that the country farmhouse style is going for good, only that it is being modernised through creative use of colour and making space for outside-the-box ideas.

Ditch the velvet, opt for low maintenance texture

We love velvet for its unique softness and have particularly enjoyed super comfy couches which are upholstered in the stuff. Velvet has served us well, but all good things must end and that velvet corner piece is starting to look tired and dated. While all our velvet pieces looked great when we first got them, they picked up fluff and pet hair like nothing else on Earth, and frankly, we’re sick of the upkeep!

To replace your tired, unloved velvet with something that matches with everything from your exposed brick walls to your spiral staircase, look for fabrics that are less high maintenance. Focus your search on heavy linens for your upholstery and pick soft, organic cotton for a more relaxed and effortless look. You’ll find that your rooms look and feel just as luxurious without the high maintenance, and that it was the texture you were craving the whole time - not necessarily velvet.

Swap your sterile neutrals for pops of serene colour

Neutrals were all the rage for quite a while, but we’re fed up with everything being similar shades of beige and cream. Neutrals definitely have their place in our interiors, but alone they can become sterile and lacking in character. Liven up your neutrals by adding some calming, complementary colours such as sage green, soft lilac and powder blue.

This will bring some much needed personality into your neutral interiors and make them feel as though someone actually lives there. No one wants their home to look like something on Airbnb, so be sure to add personal touches such as art or accessories in your chosen soft colour.

These are just some of the most popular ways that older, more out of date styles can be refreshed to give them a more modern, stylish feel. You may find that by incorporating some updates to your current style, you may not have to part with all your old furniture and furnishings, and may be able to save yourself quite a bit of money in the process. Don’t be afraid to be creative, just keep things simple and only change a few things at a time until you’ve created something you love.
