Why Support TIL?

Oct 18, 2021

The Short of It

TIL is a labour of love, an idea that I continue to work on because I want to use it and think other people will also find it useful. As such I will continue to work on it as much as possible for as long as possible. However, it is also true that there are costs associated with the project, especially as my confidence has grown and my ambition along with it.

If you would like to see more of my ideas, to see TIL grow, and are able to do so I would be grateful for any donation you could make.

The Long of It

The project has grown at a steady rate since it began, both on the main site and elsewhere. TIL is comprised of the website, newsletter, Micro.blog profile, Mastodon profile, omg.lol pages, and the various resources used to make the posts and pages for those different accounts. My work is spread across a variety of software, devices, and an already substantial number of web pages. And then there are the words of course.

I have had more support than I expected, from the Micro.blog team (in more than one way!) through to the members of Micro.blog itself, and find that I am both grateful beyond explanation and motivated to continue the work.

For the future I am focused on two areas:

1. Consolidation; the aim of TIL is to provide a comprehensive set of resources, updated on a regular basis.

  • This entails the continued production of existing resources.

  • And improvements to those resources, whether edits for relevance, updates to match new Micro.blog features, or any other way in which I can best maintain said resources.

2. Expansion; over time the project has grown in different ways, and will continue to do so.

  • Other media types will be explored, moving beyond the existing majority of text + links.

  • By providing as many useful tools as possible.

The reason my stated aims are relatively vague is that I do not like to make promises regarding specific ideas. I am comfortable with the notion of previewing upcoming resources, especially if they are of a new type, or updates to the project if they bring significant change. However, I am unwilling to set expectations based on dates and ideas that are not already close to publication, and so I aim to never make empty promises.

Costs

You can see specific information about the costs of running TIL on the Funding page.

NOTE: Micro.blog supports TIL with complimentary hosting.

And finally

I’d like to thank you for reading this, any of it really, and especially if you have made it this far. For those who would like to donate but cannot do so please believe me when I say that I am not bothered in any way and completely understand your situation; apart from anything else I have been in that position for most of my life, and as I write this am very much in that position still.

No matter what you can or cannot do, the fact remains that the Micro.blog community has and continues to be a great inspiration for my work on TIL, and I am thankful for your continued support.
