Slanted Theatre is an Asian Australian theatre company.

Slanted Theatre have taken the Sydney theatre scene by storm since its first production in January 2021 where we presented our debut production, a sold-out performance of American playwright, Lauren Yee’s 'Ching Chong Chinaman'. Since then we presented multiple premieres of short plays for Short + Sweet including 'What You Don't Know' and 'we regret to inform you that' and the Australian debut of our production of Singaporean playwright, Ovidia Yu’s 'Three Fat Virgins Unassembled' in collaboration with KXT bAKEHOUSE, featuring an all Asian, female-identifying cast and crew and won Sydney Theatre Award's Best Costume Design of an Independent Production (Esther Zhong). Our most recent production, 'Lady Precious Stream' brought together an emerging Asian cast and crew which tranports you to 1930s Britain through a traditional Chinese play.

We just celebrated our first anniversary, but we have already worked with over 50 Asian theatre-makers, including various directors, designers, actors, and more. Our aims are to work with Asian casts and crew, create relevant and interesting work, eliminate tokenistic casting, improve representation, to create conversation, and explore diversity within the 'Asian' community.

Creating indie theatre in Sydney is no easy task. We're super grateful to organisations such as KXT bAKEHOUSE and Short + Sweet who have provided a helping hand in the past, but now that our community is growing, we foresee many productions which means an increase in costs.

Here are just some of the typical costs from an indie single production:
$4000 Venue Hire
$1000 Set
$1000 Costume
$500 Props
$300 Lighting/Sound
Then add on Insurance, Marketing, Licenses, Rehearsal Hire ($25/hour)
Our coming productions will have similar costs...

And that's not even including artist fees! All the artists, designers, and creators involved in Slanted Theatre are part of a profit share agreement which means we split the profit between ourselves post-show. This is the typical way to produce theatre in Sydney.

What will your donations cover?
Your donations will help make possible ...
- theatre that celebrates diversity within the Asian community
- video content: trailers, interviews, Q&As
- day-to-day costs like our website, insurance so that we can focus on generating profits for...cast and crew profit share!
And all it takes is a monthly subscription for as little as $2/month!

Thank you so much for your consideration, and we hope to see you in the foyer soon!
