Plains Zebra (Equus quagga)

•Order - Perissodactyla.

•Family - Equidae. •

Diet - Herbivores (grass, leaves and stems). Spend majority of their day feeding.

•Length -

Height = 127 - 140cm.

Head + body = 217 - 246cm (length).

Tail Length = 47 - 56.5cm.

•Weight -

Males = 220 - 320kgs.

Females = 175 - 250kgs.

•Gestation - 13 months.

•Habitat - Wide range in East and Southern africa. Usually in grasslands and savanna woodlands. Absent from deserts, rainforests and wetlands. 

•Population - wide spread but populations decreasing (near threatened). 150 000 - 250 000 mature individuals remain. 

•Life span - 20 year in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity. 

• Facts

- Plains Zebra can run up to 65km/h.

- One well connected kick from a Zebras hind legs can break a lions jaw.
