The Major League Baseball (MLB) Washington Nationals signed a home run hitter for $5 million.
MLB.com reported on the 24th (Korean time) that Washington signed free agent (FA) Joey Gallo to a one-year contract worth $5 million (about 6.7 billion won).
Gallo, a left-handed hitter, hits a huge long ball when hit in an 'all or nothing' style, but is a '100% home run hitter' with too many missed swings and strikeouts.
Gallo, who debuted with the Texas Rangers in 2015 and played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Minnesota Twins, played in 863 games over 9 seasons and had a batting average of only 0.197, but hit 198 home runs. He averaged over 20 home runs per year.
However, due to his strikeouts (1,190), which were more than twice as many as his career walks (464), he was widely criticized as a 'blackmailer'. Nevertheless, Washington, which lacked a home run hitter, recruited Gallo with high expectations for his slugging ability.
Washington had 151 team home runs last season, last in the National League and 29th in the major leagues.
